About A2B Strategy

From where you are, to where you need to be.

As a business unit CEO, you know your business better than anyone else. At A2B Strategy, we know the competitive landscape in banking and financial services better than anyone else.

We provide an introductory review of the broad competitive landscape when you start your annual Strategy Review. This is to sharpen focus on where your company is (Point A) before turning to where Point B is and where it might be. At your discretion, we are also happy to stay on and facilitate the rest of the day so that you can participate rather than manage the agenda.

We are not taking your watch to tell you the time. But as an outsider with deep industry expertise, we can challenge status quo assumptions, surface blind spots, and keep the conversation focused on what will actually move the needle.

Brad Beetar — Founder

Brad brings over 30 years of experience spanning mining economics, management consulting, and banking strategy.

Gold Fields of South Africa — Group Economist (1991–2001)

Appointed Group Economist at the age of twenty-six at what was then the second-largest mining house in the world. Responsible for all domestic and international economic forecasts, ran six top-quartile in-house pension and provident funds, and performed extensive greenfield, brownfield, due diligence and M&A mine valuations across South Africa and internationally. Spent a year seconded to GFMS in London, contributing to the definitive annual global gold survey.

McKinsey & Company — Management Consultant (2001–2004)

Guided executive committees at multiple mining ventures on systematically achieving measurable improvements in operational effectiveness. Developed an option pricing model as a proxy for stock market valuation of gold mines, and gamified a complex mining environment to enable mine managers to optimise ore production planning for smelter blending.

FNB / FirstRand — Head of Strategic Projects (2004–2022)

Almost two decades driving strategy and transformation across multiple business units within one of South Africa’s largest banking groups. Key achievements include:

Segmented the Consumer customer base and developed actionable work plans that moved FNB’s Niche and Middle Segments from number four to number one among the Big 4 banks. Led the zero-base creation of FNB Channel Islands — a full offshore bank — and the Global Wealth Solutions proposition. Rebuilt a customer database from over 20 third-party sources to stabilise KYC and AML compliance. Refined and implemented segmentation frameworks, and contributed to early versions of “Next Best Product” and Net Promoter Score implementations.
